Signs and Symptoms

  • Flashbacks, nightmares or intrusive memories that make you feel anxious, distressed or panicky.
  • Panic, sweating, trembling when thinking about the event.
  • Constantly alert or jumpy.
  • Constant worry that something bad will happen to you or a loved one.
  • Avoiding places, events or objects that act as a reminder.
  • Avoiding being still or alone all the time.
  • You may have no recollection of the event.
  • You may feel tense or on edge.
  • Distorted thoughts about the trauma that cause feelings of guilt and blame.
  • Find feeling positive and happy difficult.

About PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder)

PTSD is a condition which can be developed after experiencing a traumatic event. This type of trauma can leave you feeling out of control or unsafe. It is normal to feel on edge or be left feeling upset after a traumatic event. However, if your feelings persist and start to interfere with everyday life it may be PTSD.

The definition of trauma is ‘a deeply distressing or disturbing experience’. It may be you feel you are repeatedly reliving the trauma in the form of flashbacks.

Here at House of Light we can help you if you have suffered trauma following:

  • birth
  • loss due to early or late miscarriage,
  • recurrent miscarriage
  • stillbirth
  • elected or medical termination
  • parent infant separation at birth due to safeguarding concerns.

Some people exposed to trauma will remember the event, they may have painful memories, but they don’t rule their lives or change how they do things. However, if you have PTSD, it can feel like it is taking over you each day and can feel very overwhelming.

You may relive the event with flashbacks, intrusive thoughts or nightmares. You may start to avoid situations that are reminders of the event.
